Should I Go to Prom?

A lot of seniors are asking themselves “Should I go to the prom?” Some say, “No, it’s too expensive!” Others can’t wait for this once in a lifetime event. While going to the prom is not for everyone, once you missed it you cannot click the rewind button. Seniors’ time here at PHS is drawing to a close.

Once this year ends you might not see your friends again. The prom is a great chance to be together as a class. We have shared many experiences together, both good and bad and this is a chance to reminisce and celebrate. Go for the experience. Enjoy yourself because after graduation you might not even see your friends anymore. You don’t have to go crazy spending money. Don’t go overboard; It is NOT A WEDDING!

If you do not have a date, do not be anxious, just go with a group of friends. Take your own car. It is cheaper by far than getting a limousine and if you want to leave early, you have that ability. You will meet people you never notice in school. You will see people that you never get a chance to talk to. You are creating good new memories that you will be able to remember forever. At what other time will you get the chance to look like a princess, or a prince, and have fun for a truly memorable evening?
Where do the whole idea of a prom come from? Why do schools all across America have proms? The prom has been traced back to the 19th century when American universities held co-ed banquets for each year’s graduating class. The word prom is short for promenade, the formal, introductory parading of guests at a party.

In more recent history, President Ford’s daughter, Susan, got permission to hold her high school senior prom at their home, the White House, in 1975. Can you imagine being the boy who asked Susan for a date to the prom?
Not only did he have a loving father to worry about, but the secret service and background checks
as well.

Every year over four million teenagers skip prom because they don’t have a date. Don’t be a statistic. The fun you will have that evening will far outlast the memory that you did not have a date for the night. Just be thankful that you don’t need a secret service background check to get in.
