In this second installment of The Amazing Spiderman franchise, there are a lot of secrets revealed about the main character, Peter Parker (the secret identity of Spiderman), played by Andrew Garfield.
We finally discover why Peter’s parents were forced to leave him and what actually happened to them. However, I don’t want to spoil the movie for anyone, so no spoilers here.
Rest assured the Amazing Spiderman protects the good people of New York against a new array of three famous villains. First, as the past of Peter Parker is revealed, his long-time friend, Harry Osbourne, played by Dane DeHaan, loses his father, reconnecting his relationship with Peter. Trying to cure the same disease the killed his father, and to prolong his own life, he inadvertently becomes the Green Goblin.
However, this is not the cartoonish Green Goblin of the old Toby Maguire Spiderman movies. This is a whole new breed of villainy. He is motivated by desperation to save his place in his father’s company, OSCORP, and also to save his very life.
The Green Goblin is aided by Electro, an electric man, who is played by Jamie Foxx. This is a different role for Foxx, but he carries the role of a nerd, turned villain, quite well. He is convincing as both, a nerdy scientist who is unnoticed, and also a menacing electric man who blows up Time’s Square.
The last villain, who has been present in every single preview for this movie is the Rhino, played by Paul Giamatti. Rhino is a little bit of a disappointment because he is only in about two minutes of film. It is a great sequence of action though. Paul Giamatti plays a good raging psychopath, but is pretty easily defeated.
The best part of this movie is the development of the relationship between Peter Parker and his girlfriend Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone. The emotional attachment between these two is very realistic. I really felt the joys and pains of that relationship, which is a great feat in a super-hero action movie.
Really, everything in this movie is great. All the acting and action comes together well. Andrew Garfield did a great job being Spiderman, even better than Toby Maguire, in my opinion. The balance between emotional scenes and pounding action is smooth and should provide plenty of action goosebumps.
The best way to see this movie is to get a group of friends, and then go see it in IMAX 3D. It will definitely not disappoint.
