This was a season of firsts for this baseball team, and it was also the first time ever that Passaic made the semi-finals in both the county and the state. PHS was seeded seventh in the state tournament. This is quite an achievement and the hard work and diligence, along with excellent coaching and talented players all paid off. The work of this team was noticed, and, another first, PHS remained in the Herald News’ top ten for the entire season.
This is a talented team and the 2014 season saw the most PHS players sent to the state all star game. Galvis Blandino will play first base and Joey Garcia will pitch. Coach Diaz will be coaching the Northeast All Star Team. These students have also been recognized, and will represent PHS, by making 1st Team All Area and 1st Team All County.
Pitcher, Jemal Dye also made 1st Team All Area. He is a multi-talented athlete, also being the captain of the basketball team.
As if this season of firsts was not enough, for the first time in PHS history the baseball team won the Liberty Conference Championship. Coach Diaz was selected Conference Coach of the Year. Coach Diaz wants to provide opportunities to compete at the highest levels of high school baseball, for his team. The coach said that also wants to “instill discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, honesty, and integrity,” in his student athletes. The 2014 PHS Baseball team has certainly lived up to this stated mission. This will certainly be a season to remember. Let us all recognize the hard work put forth by the baseball team. By making themselves champions they make us all proud.
