The problem of bullying in high school has been discussed on the national level for some time now. However, it is a hidden issue. Many students do not report the incidents of bullying and schools do not publicize any occasions of bullying to keep students as comfortable as possible.
At PHS, bullying is not a real problem. Movies make schools seem like a terrible place, especially for incoming freshmen. However, the reality, at least here at PHS, is quite different.
Students do not terrorize the freshman when they arrive at PHS. Other than a little laughter when a freshman walks into the wrong room, another student will help the lost student find their way. There is a feeling that we are all in the same boat here at PHS.
The typical expectations of students at PHS are just like any other typical high school. Students are expected to get good grades, graduate, and make something of themselves. Students from all around the school say that there no instances of bullying here.
“Students just seem to help each other here,” said sophomore Aleli Bravo.
Like any school, there are disagreements, there are even fights, and some days people are in a bad mood, so they might be mean to their fellow students.
But, there is not an organized system to make some students feel good at the expense of their classmates.
One reason why this is such a bully free zone is because to the strict policies in place by the district to curb any actions of bullying. In other words, the students know that acts of violence or bullying lead to major consequences, so students would rather avoid the issue.
Another reason that there is so little, if any, bullying at PHS is that there are so many security guards and other staff in the halls to help and monitor students as they go from class to class.
Senior Jonathan Toxtli said, “I have been to other schools and the students at PHS are more helpful and accepting. Everyone will help each other to succeed.”
While every school will have problems from time to time the positive social environment at PHS will definitely help the success of students at our school.
