t was a very busy holiday season for movie fans. One film was one of the most anticipated movies of all time, and others should have been delayed – forever. The holiday movie season has become a seriously important time to release blockbuster movies, only second to the summer season. This season saw the release of perhaps the most anticipated movie of the year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
There was hype about this movie for months, the slow release of one trailer after another, and a lot of discussion about how the plot would unfold in one of the best known and loved epics of all time, not to mention whether director J.J. Abrams would do the series justice, as he has done for Star Trek, or whether it would be another let down, like the prequel series. To say the least, this has been one of the most talked about movies of recent memory.
Put your worries to rest, Star Wars does live up to the hype. Critics have likened it to the original movie from 1977, now called A New Hope. In fact it does have a lot of similarities and the fun attitude that is felt in the first films is present in this movie as well. All that remains to be seen is whether the action can be sustained in future installments or if this is a one-off movie.
If epic science fiction is not your thing, or if you can’t get into a sold out performance, the perhaps Ride Along 2, with Kevin Hart and Ice Cube is a delightful comedy. Sadly the best part of this movie is Hart and Ice Cube, but even though the buddy cop genre, has been completely overdone, this film is still entertaining and enjoyable and surely will make money.
Another genre that has been beaten to death is anything with zombies in it. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, enough said. Set in nineteenth century England, a mysterious plague turns the countryside into a zombie apocalypse. The characters of the novel Pride and Prejudice are luckily there to stop the zombie onslaught. Lily James plays Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy is played by Sam Riley. They fall in love as they kill zombies, just as Jane Austen had envisioned
The holiday movie season did offer a wide variety of movies. From comedy and action, to epic science fiction, to horror, there was a lot out there to thrill fans.
