The PHS Drama Club presented their annual school musical, “A Musical Review.” However, to be precise, it was a mashup of all the best scenes from many different plays. The story was based on the adventures of Captain Hook with Wendy, John, and Michael, the three kids from Peter Pan, who traveled to different time periods.
They started with the late 1980’s, with a show opener from Once on This Island, a story fairy tale celebration of love, hope, life and death. As the story progressed the kids get to travel to the fabulous fifties in Grease, the kids get to experience the friendship, romance and adventures of the group of kids in Rydell High School, continuing into West Side Story, a story a story set in the 1960’s about the harsh life of the Upper West Side in New York City and forbidden romance of a Polish boy and a Puerto Rican girl.
The second act began with Hairspray, also set in the 60’s. As the kids are taken to Tracy’s adventures she tries to become a dancer, but learns a bigger lesson about racial integration. The cast ends the play with a TERRIFIC performance as the Addams Family.
Was the school musical was a miracle this year? Maybe not a miracle but it was really good. Overcoming some real obstacles this year, Ms. Kostiak, the Drama teacher and the musical director with the support of Mr. Rusca, band director, worked hard to get this curtain opened. Other teachers that worked hard to help get this play together were Mr. Schmitz, Mrs. Merced, Mrs. Gauthier, Mrs. Singer, Mrs. Sanchez, Mrs. Godavanik, Mrs. Zagrobelny. Of course the cast and crew also worked extra hard to make this play possible.
Junior Albert Baez, speaking about his role in the play, said, “Even though it was stressful it was a pretty fun experience. Mrs. Kostiuk saw the potential in all of us and always motivated us to keep going. The cast would support one another. My favorite part had to be working with the instructors and practicing for Grease” He added that “the play was really good, the instructors were great and the people were amazing and fun to work with.”
Junior Krystin Caridad said, “It was the best play from all three that I’ve done. Even though I did it to prepare me for what I want to do in college, I loved having something to do after school and meeting new people. It was a little stressful because we had a limited time for six different plays, what a challenge. I really encourage other students to do it next year because it’s an unforgettable experience.”
Director Mrs. Kostuik said, “As many of you might know this is my last presentation at PHS. I will be moving on to another great adventure as of this December. This year’s ‘Broadway Musical Review 2016’ is my fifth and largest musical production I have had the pleasure to work on.”
Mrs. Kostuik wishes to thank, “my cast and speech and drama students, who came through to make this production a success.”
