If you haven’t heard about the Mannequin Challenge, you may be living under a rock, or perhaps, you do not use social media. The Mannequin Challenge is a new trend where people remain frozen in action while a video is being recorded, generally with music being played in the background. It’s all over social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

So who is responsible for this viral obsession?

The Mannequin Challenge’s origin traces back to twitter user @thvtmelanin_, a high school student named Emili from Jacksonville, Florida. Emili told Inverse via Twitter, “One day I just went to the front of the class and stood there. That’s when my friend A’laynah said, ‘Hey, you look like a mannequin.’ Then my friend Bre’Onna and Jasmine joined and we started doing all these crazy poses.”

What started as a silly class joke, exploded into a social media challenge.

Celebrities also took part in the challenge. Reality television stars Robert Kardashian and Blac Chyna made the birth of their baby viral, by posting a mannequin challenge video of the birth on their social media platforms. First Lady Michelle Obama, professional basketball team Cleveland Cavaliers, Kate Hudson, Kevin Hart and many more celebrities took part in the Internet trend.

With the internet’s fast paced nature, there’s no telling how long this trend will last.
