During the month of February, we celebrate the achievements by African Americans and it is a time for recognizing the fundamental role of African Americans in U.S. history. America has become one of the most diverse countries and it is time we honor the achievements that African Americans have contributed to our nation.
Memorable names that will never be forgotten include: Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Malcolm X, and Maya Angelou. Their achievements have inspired people today to stand up for themselves and have given the world a new perspective about how much stronger we are together.
PHS has made sure to honor this month during the morning announcements by remembering the lives of African Americans who have been prominent in our history. Teachers and students have shared poems and stories about important figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Frederick Douglass. Even in classrooms in all subject areas, teachers have made mention to distinguished people in the African American community.
Sophomore Anayelly Juarez said, “It is a good feeling that our school takes the time out to acknowledge such important people and events in America’s history. Sharing this information on the morning announcements provides some inspiration for students to receive at the beginning of their day.”
Black History Month is about integrity, leadership, determination, and remembrance. We take the time to see what people before us have fought for and how people all races and ethnicities should have the right to equality.
This month not only promotes equality and remembrance for African Americans, but also encourages acceptance and equality for all.
Through Black History Month, forever in our nation we are reminded of the voices silenced and those who left a mark that created a change.
