Under the wing of Chief Newman, the Passaic High School Bowling Team has strived to accomplish more than just winning.
Chief Newman said “I bring my experience of 30 years as bowler to the team, coaching and advising the team. I also attend coaching clinics to learn about the new techniques and equipment for upcoming seasons to pass on to my more experienced bowlers. I also teach them theory and application of bowling.”
The team has shown everyone in the school that bowling takes more effort than many tend to see.
Although every bowler is working together in hopes of making it to the championship at Carolier Lanes in New Brunswick, NJ, they are still keeping their focus on the bigger picture. The team had a record of Varsity Boys 3-3, and Varsity Girls 2-2.
Chief Newman has made it clear that her bowlers are student-athletes before they are athletes.
In the 2015 school year, Coach Newman was hired as the Assistant Coach. The next school year she was hired as Head Coach for 2015-2016. Thirty years of doing something she loves brought her the opportunity to show younger bowlers the skills, patience, and dedication it takes to bowl.
The PHS bowlers ended their season with a bang. The end of the season came to a conclusion for the girls’ team with six wins and eight losses.
For the boys’ team it ended with eight wins and six losses. Boys Varsity bowler, Michael Polanco had an average score of 195, his outstanding season brought him to Individual State finals. Overall, the bowling team has made to sure to leave a striking mark on the bowling lanes.
