Basketball has been one of the most awaited sports in Passaic High School. Two of the Varsity Basketball team members made sure to let the school know that the game isn’t about winning, but what you learn from the game. The basketball team has proven to learn from their mistakes in a game and practice harder. Each game brings new improvement and a new form of dedication.
“Playing a sport is more about teamwork then it is about trying to win” said #3, Jose Pereyra. There is no chance of a win if no one is communicating, right? Varsity team captains Qasim Wilson, #11, and Jamir Thomas, #1, have made sure to let their fellow team mates know that the effort they make while practicing is put to test on the court.
Players Maycoll Almanzar, #4, and Jose Pereyra, #3, respond to their ambition during games by saying “the way we communicate and the effort we put in practice causes us to lose focus during games.”There is always a bigger picture when striving for a win, the players on this team hope for the team to win together, but also be able to become stronger and wiser while striving for the win.”
Jose Pereyra, #3 claims that in order to succeed, “the players all need to work harder together, communicate with each other and grow as individuals.”
Twelve out of 14 players on the team are seniors so although the game is just a game to some, for these 12 boys it means a final goodbye to high school basketball.
The boys accomplished a win against Passaic County Technical Institute on Feb. 6, with a score of 63-62.
Wilson, #11 scored a total of 16 points, and Robert Sierra and Diante Hudson both scored 12 points each. This win was well earned after a loss to Passaic Tech earlier in the season.
The Passaic Indians also won a game against Passaic Valley, with a score of 57-48. Player Nysaiah Frost scored a total of 24 points to lead the Indians to victory.
The boys team ended their season with a record of 6-10.
