Girls Who Code Club

By Daisy Gonzalez and Samantha Dume

As children, girls are stereotyped into the idea that all girls must like pink, play with Barbies, play house, and become a stay at home mom to care for the children while the husband goes off to work.  As boys growing up, the opportunities are endless from being a truck driver, doctor, lawyer, officer, firefighter, engineers, and scientists.

Many teen girls who have high hopes in becoming an engineer and scientist are scattered, and the Girls Who Code hope to change that.

On their website, www.girlswhocode.com, their stated goal is, “The gender gap in technology and engineering is getting worse despite the increase demand for STEM-related jobs. GM and the national nonprofit Girls Who Code (GWC) today announced a partnership to inspire and empower thousands of U.S. middle and high school girls to become future leaders in these fields.”

Passaic High School, alongside Mr. Blath, stand together to empower the girls and show that the societal norm of the average girl deserves a change. The Girls Who Code Club accepts new members each week. Come down to S107 and make a change!

As Socrates once said, “The secret of change is to focus all the energy, not in fighting the old but building on the new.”
