The newest addition to extracurricular activities has been the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Jr (SHPE Jr.). This club is an extension of a bigger SHPE organization, located at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).

Mr. Martinez, Dr Sanchez and Mr. Chomko are the advisors of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers club. In SHPE students have the chance to be part of fun experiments and labs. Students can also explore colleges and job opportunities that they might enjoy in the future.

Recently, members of the SHPE program got an opportunity to attend a competition at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) on Dec. 10. The event was hosted by SHPE-NJ, in partnership with SHPE New Jersey Institute of Technology, SHPE Rutgers and SHPE Stevens Institute of Technology. Our students participated against other SHPE Jr. Chapters from across north Jersey.

In the contest, the students created a definition for sustainability and presented it in front of other high schools and college students. The jury then picked the best presentation and asked the team members trivia questions about sustainability.

The teams that attended the competition took first and second place. First place team members include seniors John Garcia and Josue Galvez, and sophomore Anthony Merejildo. Second place team members include juniors Michelle Bautista and Angel Gonzalez, and senior Leonardo Jimenez. Other PHS students that participated in the event were sophomores Anayelly Juarez, Darlene Martinez, and Eduardo Ramirez.
