PHS Special Olympics shows outstanding sportsmanship

By Divya Rana ‘21

The PHS Special Olympics is a sports organization for students that have disabilities. However, that does not stop them from competing in sports, having fun, and doing their best. There are typically two games, the Winter Games and the Summer Games. The student athletes have a large arrange of events to choose from, some of which include the following: track and field, bocce, and so much more.

When the PHS Special Olympics team athletes participated in the North Area Bocce event, Ms. Ackerson-Baez was delighted to witness the outstanding sportsmanship her students displayed throughout the day regardless of a win or lose outcome. She observed that Clifton and Passaic were able to maintain fair behavior and they continued to amaze her with their ability to put aside any resemblance of competitiveness for the greater good.

Special thanks to the girls basketball team, Coach Iturrino, Coach Kush and Coach Dudek for their support at this event. They prepped breakfast and lunch for the athletes at the event and also were supportive enough to cheer on the athletes.

The day was a rough start overall but they managed to pull through and make it a great day. They will continue to practice and work hard to be more proficient in their game so that they are prepared for the Summer Games in June.
