“Ready Player One” has not just captured the narrative, but also the feel for video games. The beginning of the movie introduces generations of video games into a world of virtual reality.
The film inaugurates a thrilling idea of virtual reality set in the year 2045, when it seems like we will be able to experience some technological advances such as a “physical virtual world.”
The introduction of the OASIS in the movie, in which humans become their own avatars, breaking sexuality identification boundaries, gives into the nostalgia for the pop culture of the 1980s. It’s overall message is that in our technological age, we need to spend more time outside of technology and step into the real world.
But let’s face it, within the OASIS, the scenes in New York with King Kong smashing through roads and slashing into the frame, gives us the feel and love for the classic King Kong character. Who wants to live in the real world when you could experience this and other iconic video games/movie characters and escape world problems?
Virtual reality is essentially the future and whether we are able to pursue a universe closer to our reality but also in films is up to us. “Ready Player One” is the movie I suggest people watch, because at the end of the day the movie is for those who have the feel for video games as much as the creator of the OASIS did.
