Men’s Summer Fashion Trends Include Stripes and Colors

By Bryan Castro ‘19

New season means new gear. Summer has snuck up on us like those automated subscriptions. It was around 50 degrees a few weeks ago! Some people haven’t even put away their thick sweaters, or even thought of ways to stay cool during the summer but remain stylish. Let’s take care of the situation and transition our style from spring to summer, it’s that time of the year once again. Here are three fashion trends you should look out for this season:

Stripes have been around for as long as we could all remember, we have seen them go from crime to fashion, most notably Coco Chanel and Guess. This summer they are no stranger to the scene, returning as a summer trend. This year vertical stripes have become a thing. Instead of having the standard horizontal stripes that book club moms have been adapting, vertical stripes are being seen in a variety of clothing. It has officially become men’s new go to print this summer. It has been seen in 2018 fashion week runways: bombers, field jackets, and shirts. Style it right and you’ll look like Luka Sabbat, taking it too far and you’ll look like you’re ready for a pajama party (those are still a thing).

Side-stripes trousers are still holding on strong this year. Before you go and grab your Adidas track pants, we are talking about Jerry Lorenzo “reviving” the side-stripe trousers. Luxury brands went over the top this season using them in their collections. If you don’t have side-stripes on your trousers this season, there’s something that you might be doing wrong. Pacsun, Prada, and even Valentino have taken the trend already, and it’s not just high end, but there’s also affordable pairs out there. There’s a secret to making them work without looking “sporty.” Match the trousers with tonal shirts and low-top sneakers to balance the outfit.

Tonal is the way to go this summer, no more “all black” everything. It works with possibly anything you could think of, and this year we are getting a full array of colors to choose from. Blue is in this summer, but also try experimenting with different neutral colors. Keep it simple with the amount of tonal colors you’re wearing, two to three is the magic number. I recommend to use tonal pants or shorts as the foundation of your outfit, and build your way up from there. For the shoes, refrain from wearing oxford shoes or anything high-top, for this I’ll recommend low-top shoes in colors black, white, or grey.
