Probably the best part of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is fun. This movie has good guys and bad guys, but the fate of the planet does not hang in the balance. This spider origin story feels more fun just because there is not a heavy feeling of major events hanging in the balance.
This is an animated film, and it seems to work for this retelling of Spider-man. The action is non-stop, in a way that a live action movie cannot match. It is also a feast of pop-culture references. It really feels like New York. Actually it feels more like modern New York than the “regular” Spider-man movies.
Don’t worry, Spidey is still the same type of character we have come to love and respect. He is still a super smart, loner teenager, from Queens, who questions himself and must fight supervillains. And he does it with the traditional Spider-flair.
The one thing that IS different is that this Spider-Man is not Peter Parker.
This is a different universe of Spider-Man. Thanks to a disruption in the space-time continuum, there are a couple of Peter Parkers, a robot spider, a cartoon pig spider, a black and white Spider-Man, and even a Gwen Stacy Spider-Woman. They all converge, to give Miles Morales, the reality of being a true spider-man.
He does learn throughout this movie that, “… with great power comes great responsibility.”
This movie is truly for everyone. Whether a fan of Spider-Man in the comics, or on the screen, or not yet a spider-fan, this movie will entertain.
