The PHS Drama Club presented their school musical performance this year with “Emma: A Pop Musical.”
The plot of this play is loosely based on Jane Austen’s novel, but updated for a modern audience, with classic hit pop songs from The Supremes, all the way to modern hit pop songs like Katy Perry, and everything in between.
This play came out in 2015, on the 200th anniversary of the first publication of Emma, by Jane Austen. It has been adapted in many ways, but none so uniquely as the version performed by the PHS Drama Club. All the songs are seamlessly incorporated into the narrative, which follows the novel’s plot.
Director Laura Rizzo said, “The students have been working very hard to present this piece including after school, weekends, holidays and vacation times.”
The hard work was evident by the way the complex music, dancing and acting, worked together to tell the story of Emma.
