Varsity Volleyball Goes to Championship

By Henry Hernandez

Legacy is the slogan of the Varsity Indian Volleyball Team. It is what they use to motivate themselves for practices and their focus for the year as they try to complete a perfect season. At press time that season is 12-1, a great feat.

But what does legacy mean to them? They think about how they work and how they want to be remembered. With a season that good, they will be remembered for a lot, their work, dedication and talent.

Senior Joseph Vasquez said, “I am so glad we could end the season on a high note. It is great to have the school recognize our hard work.” Another senior, Bryan Aquino said, “I hope everyone knows that with hard work we found success. We work really hard.”

Their coach agrees, Mr. Munoz said, “I’ve been very lucky to have these student athletes.” He added, “They spend time, energy, and money to do club volleyball.” The varsity players graduating this year are Bryan Aquino, Noel Kelly Camarena, Wilbert Gilbert, Kendall Malloy, Eddy Pena, and Joseph Vasquez. With so many seniors graduating from the team, there might be concerns about the long-term success of the team, however, that is not the case. “There are so many great players coming up next year, who are sophomores this year. Passaic will have a great volleyball team for years to come,” said Josesph Vasquez.

Therefore, the secret to the success of this team is the long-term hard work and dedication. Coach Munoz said, “I consider myself a teacher first. I teach the skills of volleyball. I ask about their short and long term goals.” He added, “Goals vary from player to player. I can only work with students that want to be their best.” This philosophy seems to have worked, because this team is the best. They are ranked number one in the Liberty League Division this year. They are also seeded number one in Passaic County (the last time was in 2016).

The passion of these players makes them proud and successful. Their LEGACY, left to all us, is that hard work towards a goal pays off!
