In the 1980’s Mobile Suit Gundam came out with anime in Japan. In the 1990’s Dragonball Z broke the mainstream wall while Neon Genesis Evagelion opened the door to the lane-night in Japan. In the 2000’s Fullmetal Alchemist marked the peak of manga-to-anime while Code Grass and Death Note headed to the front of the class with a new anti-hero genre.
Then in 2013, Attack on Titan was realized and had shaken the industry for its increased reach into the market.
Unless you have been living under a rock, this story should already come to mind, but for your rock dwellers, here is a brief recap. Attack on Titan takes place in a world where humanity lives inside cities surrounded by three enormous walls that protect them from the gigantic man-eating titans.
The storyline follows Eren Yeager, who vows to exterminate the titans after a titan brings the destruction of his hometown and the death of his mother. There is a lot of tension and a lot of pain and emotional baggage to contend with in this series.
However, it is such a well done work that there are many points that are just awesome. The means of telling the story, the character development, openings and closings, the art and narrative are all part of the anime “it factor. This work has it all. The series gains momentum and continues its tension throughout the entire series, which is no small feat.
One thing that can also be said of this series is that you can watch it with your little siblings. So, if you are stuck babysitting, maybe watch Titan so you can enjoy a show as much as your babysitting jobs. There is no sexual references at all in the show. Even though the titans are completely naked, there is nothing to be seen and it doesn’t seem weird. It is like watching a naked Barbie doll, a little weird but not obscene.
Every part of the show from my point of view is really good. The show is clean and the animation just works. The intense part of this show is that there is some violence. The show is about giants eating humans, so there will be some violence. Also, a lot of characters die in this series, and I mean a lot. It is like, who is getting eaten this week.
The violence is intense but not gory. Even though, if you have some really young babies to sit, I would steer clear of this because there are a few parts where humans get stepped on and there is some blood. You don’t want that getting back to your boss.
So if you can handle a little graphic violence, then this show is totally for you. If you can’t just fast forward through those parts because it is still worth it.
Enjoy.
